Sunday 17 July 2011, Pallinup River to Albany, 110km

As Deb said in the last blog, it was freezing cold when we woke this morning, to be true, it was freezing cold all night. It took us some
time to muster the courage to get out of bed, but we managed to get up by about 7am.

I think the cold slowed us down a bit and we eventually got back on the road around 8:45. It was a short drive, 110km, to our next stopover, Middleton Beach, Albany. As we drove into town we stopped to get fuel, it wasn’t until we were in the Petrol Station I realised that they aren’t really made for cars towing a 24’ van. After a little reversing and some careful manoeuvres I managed to get out all OK without a scratch on either the van, the car or the petrol pumps, which was a relief.  🙂  (mmm Greg is being rather modest, it was a bit tight and he did an amazing job manoeuvring the car
and van – I am in awe at how capably he has driven – but we learnt another lesson, when in town and you are stopping the night, drop the van off and then fill the car!)

We arrived at the Big 4 Middleton Beach Leisure Park (aka
Caravan Park) around 10am and were able to check straight in and go to our site. It has been really good so far, every time we have arrived very early at caravan parks we have been able to go straight in, I hope it keeps up.  The Park is right in the beautiful Middleton
Beach and next to a Golf course, I think I might get a little fishing in, but don’t like my chances of golf, just too much to see and do around here.

After setting up, doing a few loads of washing, getting it
on the line and then a delicious cheese platter for lunch, we headed off into the Tourist Information centre to get the low down on this town and the MUST DO things. The guy there was really helpful and we now have a bit of a plan. All will be revealed over the next few days and blogs. 😉

After we left the Info Centre we headed back to get our cameras, ooops, I hope we don’t do that again. LOL

We took the scenic coastal drive back into town, and called
into the Old WWI fort and WWI commemorative Statue and lookout. The lookout gave amazing 360 views over Albany and Middleton, and all the islands off the coast. We are so lucky it’s a bright blue sunshiny day, the views were awesome.
We then drove into town and drove around the heritage trail and had a look at many of the old significant building around town that played a big part in both the areas and WA’s foundation. The oldest house in WA is in Albany and it has been fully restored to its original condition.

We finished the touristy bit for the day and were back at
the van by about 3:30pm. We eventually dealt with all the washing and cleaning and had a bit of a relax in the afternoon. We had a very welcomed Skype call from Carly, Kieran, Ella, Ethan and Aiko & Hanna.

Tonight Deb is taking me out to the Wild Duck Restaurant for
my birthday, apparently the reviews for it are VERY good, 🙂
