5 August 2011 Near Kununurra to Adelaide River NT 800km

We woke this morning to find ourselves parked in a setting Arthur Streeton would have been proud to have painted. The bush setting we had parked in was amazing to wake to.  All we were missing was a few kangaroos by our front door.

We made a time change last night, a bit early but at least these daylight hours made sense.  We are still in Western Australia, but in a matter of an hour or so we would be in the Northern Territory and back on CST.

Anyway, we got away just after sun up and just before we got into Kununurra we passed through our first traffic light since Perth, a few thousand km’s away, and even then it was to allow traffic flow over a dam (which I think may have been the Ord River Dam that forms Lake Argyle). The first “proper” traffic lights we struck were in Katherine.

We filled up in Kununurra and Katherine, with a jerry can top up at Timber Creek. I got told off in Katherine by a traffic patrol guy for
blocking a round-a-bout while I waited to get to a fuel pump!!!

On the trip from Broome we have seen the most road kill of the holiday. The menu consisted  of kangaroos (big and small), cattle of various breeds, birds, lizards, snakes and then this afternoon Deb saw a Crocodile road kill!!! Naturally it had to be in the Territory.!!

On the way out of Katherine we got held up for about 20 mins in a traffic jam. The traffic heading both north and south were stopped at a bridge and the police were down there doing something , and it looked like they had a crane down there. When we drove past, it looked like a car and a caravan had gone off the bridge and into a creek. The car wasn’t too bad, but the Van was totalled. We hoped the people in the car were OK.

We are spending the night at the Adelaide River Showgrounds
camping area, about 100km short of Darwin. We drive into Darwin in the morning and put the car and van into storage before flying home to say good bye to Des and tidy up a few loose ends. We hope to be back up here next weekend to continue our “Cultural Pilgrimage”

While we are home I hope to get a bit of time to post more
photos.
