Tuesday 16th of August 2011 Darwin

Enjoyed our lazy day yesterday, and very pleased the car engine has been given a clean bill of health.  Now we just need the windscreen to hold out and all will be good. 🙂

We went off into town around 9.30am and were supposed to be
doing a self guided historical tour.   We were in the Mall and I had the map out and reading the info to Greg on a couple of buildings.   BUT he was not listening 😛   He had found an App for his phone where you could see dinosaurs, through the camera on the phone, so he was chasing dinosaurs around the Mall instead and having a good time.    He said he was doing it for the grand children, but I have my doubts, he was having a lot of fun.   In all fairness you could see dinosaurs.   So I gave up on the historical tour.

Eventually we headed over to Parliament house – a fairly
modern building (circa 1994), light and airy.  It has a library inside it, after checking that out – it was full of back packers using the free internet! OK, yes, I did too!   We went upstairs to the Legislative Assembly, it was a sitting day, so we stayed and listened for a while, most of the parliamentarians were busy on their laptops – we found it as boring as they seemed to, so we left.

Then we headed over to the Supreme Court, the security officer
at the door, said there was an interesting case in Court 5, that was finishing up, so we headed upstairs to listen.  The judge was doing his summary to the jury – it was fascinating.    It appeared there were two people on trial, we stayed for about 20 mins or so,
until the judge gave the jury a break.   Back downstairs we spoke to the security officer, she lit up as she told us that one of the young men on trial was from a wealthy family, his dad is a very good barrister in Darwin – a partner from his dad’s firm was representing him.   The security officer seemed to think the accused would get off because he had such a good lawyer – I think she was sure he was guilty as he had been before the courts before and also got off.   He and his friend are accused of robbing Hungry Jacks staff by knife point and stealing $3000.00, back in March.    Evidently it is a case of interest to the people of Darwin because the accused is from such a wealthy family and as such it is presumed he will be found not guilty.   But then I guess he could be.

So stay tuned and we will let you know when the verdict is in!!

I love visiting the courts – think we might try out the Magistrates Court in Alice Springs while we are there.

In my research on Darwin, I found there was a cafe run by a swiss pastry chef, so we went and had morning tea – I had a magnificent Vanilla slice and Greg had an apple muffin.    🙂
Then it was off to do some grocery shopping – still haven’t found a way around the shopping, cooking and cleaning!!!

On our way back to the van we checked out a few fish shops but couldn’t see any fish we wanted to buy, then we drove by the Navy’s WWII oil storage tunnels.

We are having a relaxing afternoon, then tonight we have a
reservation at Hanuman a Thai/Indian restaurant – can’t wait.

(we are fairly close to the airport where we are staying, just getting buzzed by some FA – 18 Hornet  – noisy!!)

Late News: The verdict was Guilty, jury took about an hour.
