Wednesday 24 August 2011 Katherine and Katherine Hot Springs

We had a bit of a sleep in this morning, it was 8:30am before we got up!! 🙂

After a bite of breakfast we headed down to the Katherine Hot Springs to have a swim before the crowds arrived. The Spring is just behind the local Primary School on the road to Kununurra, set down off a road in a small gully. It is a beautifully shaded area and the water is crystal clear.  It didn’t take us long and we were in the
lower pool and having ourselves a natural spa.  As the water spilled over a small drop into the pool it aerated the water and it was sooo refreshing and sparkling against your skin.  Up near the “falls” the pool is about 2m  deep, and then it gets to about 1.5m deep near the end of the pool.  I guess we had been in the pool about 45mins when I realised that I had lost my wedding ring!!!   A man in the pool had goggles and leant them to me so I could search the bottom for it. Apparently there was a sign up on a tree from someone else who had lost their wedding ring in the pools.  I dived down a few times, the water was so clear, but the pebbles on the bottom were
all a bronze gold sort of colour, so I wasn’t too confident of finding it.  Luckily for me, on about my 3rd or 4th dive I saw it sitting on top of the gravel, I grabbed it and with great relief came to the surface and showed Deb and the others in the pool.  I was soo happy, and Deb was too. The others in the pool, about 6 of them, couldn’t believe how lucky I was.  The man with the goggles had been looking for the other ring that was lost ever since he got in the pool, which was some time before us.

We eventually got out and had a walk up the path to the source of the water, the Spring.  It was a hole in the ground about 2m in diameter, a “truckie” who was in the pool we were in, had told us that when he first started coming to the Springs about 10 or more years ago, the Spring was only about ¾ m diameter.

If you’re ever up this way, this is something you should do for yourself.

Deb and I both noticed that the Spring had cleaned our rings so well that they had a real sparkle to them and we just felt so refreshed and revived.

Back at the van and it was domestic time. 🙁

Van to be cleaned and clothes to be washed, but we just got into it and it was all done in no time. Good jobs to be finished!! 🙂

In the afternoon we took a quick drive into Katherine for a last bit of shopping, fill the car with fuel, post a few post cards to the grand children and have a bit of a look around.  Sad to say but there doesn’t appear to be too much in Katherine to see in the CBD area.  So it was a quick look around.

We then spent the afternoon relaxing and reading, tomorrow we head south towards Alice Springs, we are due in Alice on Saturday.

We aren’t sure of the communications we are going to have between here and Alice, but we will post an update whenever we can.

We have posted more pics of our Pilgrimage in Flickr.
