Port Willunga 20 May 2012

We started the day very lazily with a lay in until about 8am, it was just too warm in bed to face the chilly morning. Luckily we had an invitation to breakfast at Tom and Vons, so all was great.

We arrived at Tom and Vons at about 9am and they had been up for ages, getting ready for their camping trip to the Flinders Ranges.  Their camper trailer was all ready to roll, bed made, kitchen stocked up and all the necessary goodies packed away.

Tom cooked up a magnificent bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and fried bread feast. It was so delicious, and we felt very spoilt.

After breakfast we took the dogs for a walk along Port Willunga Beach. It’s a fascinating little beach with lots of history. It’s the scene of the wreck of the ship “The Star of Greece”, after which the restaurant is named, and there are the piers of an old decaying wharf extending out into the water from the beach. The remaining wooden piers of the old wharf stand like sentinels of yesteryear guarding the old fishermen’s’ caves dug into the cliff face. Apparently the caves were used to store their catches and fishing gear. There were traces of the pier all the way up to the cliffs. The caves went up to 7 or 8m into the cliffs and they were about 3m wide and 2m high. The cliffs had a band of old sea fossils in them, about 3 to 4m above the present sea-level. We could see various shells and corals in the band. The dogs did a good job staying out of the water, until about 5mins before we left, I guess they just wanted a bit of a run through the wash that was coming up the beach, but luckily they dried off before we got to the cars.

We said good bye to Von and Tom and went back to the Van. I headed off to do a bit of shopping while Deb had a bit of time to catch up with the Sunday paper on her iPad. On the way back I got a call from Vonnie and was asked to go fishing with her and Tom in the afternoon, so after a very quick lunch I headed back to their place and we went down to Aldinga Beach.

Tom told me that at this time of the year with the water getting cold, that mullet cruise the shores, and they are a good size. We were using cockles for bait and a special homemade fishy blend burley. It didn’t take long for us all to be getting bites, and we soon started bringing a few small mullet, and the odd little whiting.  It was lots of fun, being down at the beach in the warm autumn sunshine, getting lots of bites and catching a few small mullet to justify the outing. Vonnie got 1 mullet big enough to keep, but at the end of the day it was lonely as a meal and we let it go.

I got back to the Van around 3pm, and washed up (de-fishying myself), and got ready for dinner at Bens place for a late Mothers Day dinner for all the mums.

We had a really fun time up at Ben and Sarah’s. Dante, Tessa and Sophia were all in fine form and had lots of fun showing us all the goodies they bought on their Vietnam holiday. Carly and Kieran, and Ella and Ethan, all arrived about 1/2hr after we got there. Ben and Sarah cooked up a delicious Lamb roast, and after we had finished we all walked around to the local Gelato shop for desert. We had a very relaxing fun evening with everyone.

We left around 7:30pm and went back to our van for the night, Deb tells me it was 12C inside the van when we got back. (I guess that means another cold night ahead. We have nothing planned for early in the morning so I think another lay in is coming up. 🙂
