Tuesday 30 October 2012 Tuross Head to Mallacoota 253km

We got away from Tuross at around 8:30, with a plan to call into a few of the villages / towns on the way down to Mallacoota, to pick up some local produce and cheese.

We made our first stop at Narooma to pick up some basic supplies from Woolies, it was then back on the road towards the prime dairy country of southern NSW.

We pulled off the highway and took a small detour into Central Tilba, the home of the South Coast Cheese Factory and a heritage listed village.  We spent about an hour looking through all the shops in the village (well I followed Deb around!) and we finished up in the Cheese Factory.  Deb picked up a few nice little bits and pieces, including some very nice and delicate ‘Blue and White’ tea mugs.  We had a good tasting at the cheese factory and came out with a piece of their 3yr old Cheddar.

Back on the road, our next stop had to be for fuel, which we eventually got down at Bermagui, (we had about 30km left in the tank!).  Back on the road and we came into Bega from the side and I think we must have missed the cheese factory, I’m pretty sure it’s on the north side of town.  No worries we thought, we still had Eden to go.

We got into Eden at about 1:15pm.   No sign of anything dairy related in the town, so we looked for a café or bakery for lunch.  It seemed that these folk don’t eat out much!!  We eventually found a bakery and both got a pie.  The best thing about the pies was that they were a good eating temperature, you know how it goes, if you can’t say something good………..!  😛

We left Eden cheeseless, and headed towards Mallacoota.  The roads had been very winding from Tuross to Bermagui, and then the last 14km down to Mallacoota were twisty again. In all it took us about 6 3/4hrs to get to Mallacoota, an amazingly long time to do 250+km on mostly good sealed roads. Talk about a lazy drive in the country!!

It was very familiar coming into Mallacoota, which was good. We had pre-booked a waterfront site and it was worthwhile, the caravan park is pretty busy. We were set-up in no time and having a drink overlooking the lake before too long. Dinner at the Pub was forgettable, we have not had the best day for food.  😛

And so draws the close on another day. We have five nights here and then we start to make our way home. We are both looking forward to a relaxing time here.   🙂
