Thursday 1 November 2012 Mallacoota

For some reason we were both awake early this morning and so we decided to take a walk while everything was still and no one much was around, and before the bad weather arrives

It was beautiful looking out onto the lake and seeing everything so calm. Not quite mirror reflections, but close.  It was really enjoyable taking in this magnificent place.

After breakfast I went up and tried a bit of fishing up near a point close to the lake outlet. I was there for 5 mins when another guy appeared and said he had had few very good bites from yellow tail bream here yesterday. He had a bucket full of fresh live nippers and he gave me a few to try. He said the bream loved them.  He moved around the waters edge a little from me, and then about 45mins later, when neither of us had had a bite (I had tried his nippers, some prawn, pilchards and was about to try some plastics) he left, saying had hadn’t got a bite! I persevered for about another hour before I called it quits.

I got back just before the rain started. Our van was filthy dirty from all our travels (and most van parks don’t let you wash your vans there), so I got the washing bucket out and mop ready. As soon as it had been raining for a while, enough to wet the van, I got out in the rain and mopped the van down. Call me crazy if you want, but there were people out walking their dogs in the rain!! We now have a clean van.

The weather cleared a bit later in the afternoon and I tried the point again, with exactly the same results. Funny thing is, that I haven’t seen anyone get a bite let alone catch a fish, but every local I have spoken to swears blind that the fish are on and biting all over the place and lots of people are getting bag fulls!!  Me thinks they have a vested interest in encouraging people to keep buying bait and fishing stuff!!

At about 7pm the winds picked up. I’d heard on the radio that they were warning of winds up to 100km/hr in this part of Victoria. We are reasonably sheltered here, so we hope the worst of it will safely blow over the top of us. Deb is a bit (a lot) spooked by the wind, and its shaking the van a bit, so it’s going to be an interesting night.

The weather should pass us overnight and we are hoping for a much better day, weather wise, here tomorrow.
