For some reason, because we weren’t in any particular hurry to get away this morning, we were both up by 6:45am and we were on the road around 7:30 for Daylesford.
It was another uneventful trip, which is a good thing in so many ways! I can’t get over how beautiful the Gippsland country side is, rolling green hills and a mixture of sheep/dairy farming and forests. The only real blight on the landscape was the Yallourn Power Stations, adjacent to their huge brown coal open cut mines. But then, there is certain majesty in a mine so large, but then, that maybe just the metallurgist in me. 🙂
We rolled into Daylesford at around 11am, a short 3 ½ hr drive for the day. The highways are in very good condition through Victoria, so you can keep a good even speed up very easily. By 12:30, we were walking the main street of Daylesford seeing what the town had on offer. It’s the Monday before the Melbourne Cup (for which Melbourne has a Public Holiday), so today was a sort of “Unofficial” day off for a lot of Melbournians, making a 4 day weekend of it. Consequently, the streets of Daylesford were alive with people, adding to the feel of the town. Like most of Victoria’s main country towns, Daylesford is a well-kept town, with a mix of well-maintained old buildings and relatively sympathetic newer buildings. (Unlike those of similar size in NSW, that always seemed to need quite a bit of TLC to bring them to life!)
The remainder of the day was spent relaxing, another tough day. 🙂
