Happy birthday Tom, we know Vonnie would have spoilt you just right. 🙂
We woke this morning with high anticipation of the Australian Men’s Basketball teams semi-final against Serbia, Australia went in as favourites, well in our minds anyway. But alas, our team didn’t show up, I’m not sure who they were but the team on the court didn’t play anything like the one that had got them this far. Rather than watch the end of the match we headed out to go to the Mullumbimby markets as the game went into the 4th quarter. (We eventually lost the game by lots, 26)
It was an easy drive up to the markets, well after I got my wrong turn out of the way!! We parked in town and walked down to the markets which are located in a park on the south side of the town. It was an interesting market, as much for the people on the stalls and walking around, as for the goods up for sale, visualise lots of hippies, dreadlocks, bare feet. We had a bite to eat in the centre of the market and watched a duo perform on guitar, banjo and mandolin. We had last seen them play when we were at the Barkly Homestead near the NT / Qld border many weeks ago.
From there we headed into the hills and went to the Crystal Castle, we didn’t go in. It seemed to be a “For Profit” Buddist gardens. We drove on to Federal, a very small little village, with the hope of lunch at the one café in town. But it seems that when a place delivers great food everyone wants it. It was packed so we decided to move on to Bangalow rather than wait for a table then lunch.
We had lunch at a café, a bit disappointing, and then had a walk around the town. It was much larger than Federal with a mix of shops mainly focusing on tourists. On the way out we stopped to have a look at the river, but it was a bit stagnant!
We then drove back to our CP and had a bit of a relax in the afternoon.
We went into Byron and had dinner at the bowling club. It was a very comfortable little club, busy but not crowded. We don’t have much planned for tomorrow, so we will see what becomes of it. 🙂
One thing we have both noticed, starting mid-afternoon yesterday many of the, I assume, backpackers set up “shop” on the road sides through and around Byron Bay selling second hand clothes , old surfboards, crickets bats and anything else they could get their hands on by the look of it. I guess you have to make your money anyway you can.
