Tuesday 10th April 2018 Waiheke Island to Whitianga, Coromandel Peninsula

Was very windy and rained overnight.  We were up early, 6am, left 59 Q  before 7am and on the 7.30am Ferry from Waiheke to Auckland. Fortunately the rain had stopped and we didn’t get drenched in transit.  The sea was rough though, we could see why the Ferry to Coromandel Peninsula was cancelled.

By 9am we were on our way to Coromandel with 6 others, on a 12 seater bus.  It was a 3 hour trip, and when we were out of Auckland the coastline was stunning.

We were met in Coromandel by the owner of the only car rental company on the peninsula.  They had driven the car 40 minutes from Whitianga for us.  They were much friendlier and professional than the company we dealt with on Waiheke Island.

We are staying in Whitianga for the next 4 days, on our way there we stopped in Kuaotunu Bay and had wood fired pizza at Luke’s Kitchen and cafe, we enjoyed the Pizza and the view of the beach. While we were there it rained a bit and was rather blustery, the sea was choppy and brown.  We were pleased to have been on the bus today instead of the ferry.

We checked into our accomodation, Woodyhanger lodge around 2pm. To get there, we drove up a steep 1km driveway which had been bitumised. The view at the accomodation back over Whitianga was expansive and yes beautiful.  We were tired by now so we had a cuppa and put our feet up for a few hours.

Later we drove into town and had dinner at the pub then came back for an early night.  There was more rain and strong wind.  Tomorrow is going to be cold but the rain and wind are supposed to ease.

M & G were supposed to head to Fiji today for their honeymoon. Their flight was cancelled because of the cyclone there.  They are hopeful to get the flight tomorrow.

More adventures await tomorrow.
