Day 38, 26th June 2019, Clovelly, Tintagel & Port Isaac

We left after 9am this morning, got into Clovelly around 11am, was longer than we thought.  Clovelly is privately owned, by the descendants of only three families since the 13C.  You have to park up the top, pay £7.50 each and walk down a steep hill,  over cobblestones to get to the little fishing village and the harbour.  It is a really quaint, tiny village with a couple of museums that are well fitted out from the early 1900’s.   It is a marvel to me that the village could be built there.   It would have been hard work.  It was an interesting and worth the visit.

We cheated and paid £5 to get back up to the top in a land rover fitted out with bench seats.  That put us back on time ?

Not far from the car park was a delightful old garden and All Saints Clovelly church c1200, that we dropped off to see on our way out.

Next we headed to Tintagel, we have enquired how to say some of these names and they are not how we have been pronouncing them ?we are working on it.

We had a late lunch here, was delicious.  Afterwards we headed to the old Post Office, which dates from around 1380 and is a rare example of a Cornish hall-house.   Over the centuries it has had many uses, one which was a post office.  It is now a museum.

Then it was off to King Arthur’s Hall where we heard the quick story of King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin and the Knights of the round table. Was good to get a refresher and was well done. After, we were allowed to go into the large hall, was magnificent.   It is still used by the Knights Templer for their meetings.

Then it was off to St Materiana’s Church Tintagel, an 11C church.  Nearly 1000 years old.   We enjoyed our time here.   Outside you could see King Arthur’s Castle overlooking the ocean, looks impressive.  Unfortunately it isn’t open at the moment.

Half an hour away, Port Isaac was our final stop.   If you watch Doc Martin, which we don’t, it is filmed here.  We did see his house.  We enjoyed this fishing village too, they are all different.

Wow, that is 6 fishing villages in 2 days.   Think we are done for now! ?

Tonight we had dinner at Olives.

Tomorrow we are going to have a more relaxing day and go for a walk around part of the Camel Estuary in Padstow.

Love Doc Martin…. The show is terrific and I so enjoy it. Glad you stopped in Port Isaac. Lots of colourful characters in the series. Enjoyed reading about Tintagel… Too bad the castle wasn’t open but at least you saw it.
