Day 40, 28th June 2019, Padstow to Bath, via Exeter

Left Padstow just before 9am after saying goodbye to Gary & Angela who works for him.   Gary is 72 and still working hard. We enjoyed their company.

We chose to stop off in Exeter this morning, it was nearly half way to Bath.   What a great choice it was.

We arrived at 10.30am, found a carpark and then went to have a look at St Martin’s church, it is a beautiful, little Church with a lot of history, over 1000 years old.  Across the road is Exeter Cathedral, it is enormous, the construction of the Cathedral on the present site began in 1114. It was built in the Norman (Romanesque) style. The two towers and the lower part of the Nave walls survive in the present Cathedral.  A major rebuild, in Decorated Gothic style, was carried out c.1270 and c.1350. The Norman towers were incorporated into this building it was complete in 1400, it is very grand, we only got a glimpse inside.  It seemed a bit like Westminster Abbey, would have been nice to have the time to wander around, you can do a tour.

Exeter is a lovely old town dating back to 50AD with the Romans.  It would have been nice to stay a while. But alas, it was not to be.

Had a quick bite at Red Panda, we both had a pork bao, so much flavor, delicious.    We have found all of the places we have stayed/eaten at on trip adviser.   They have all been good.

Then we headed to Bath,  a few hours away.

We have a lovely room in a B & B up on a hill that overlooks their beautiful garden and the city of Bath.  It is very nice, we are here for two nights.

After unpacking and having a cuppa, around 3.30pm we headed into town, a ten minute walk away.   We thought we would go to the Baths this afternoon, all of the tourist busses would have left, we hoped it wouldn’t be too crowded.

Bath is a nice looking town, I look forward to exploring it tomorrow.   We got an audio tour with our ticket.  I loved it when we went in and saw the bath for the first time, was impressive, very Roman.  After doing the audio tour we went and sat down next to the waters edge and put our hand in the warm water.   (Not our feet mum ?) Even though I knew it would be warm, it still surprised me!  We were there for 90 minutes, so we must have enjoyed it ?.  I have wanted to see the baths for a long time, they did not disappoint.

For dinner we went to an Italian restaurant, Martini Restaurant.   It felt like we were in Italy, the staff were speaking Italian and having a joke with each other, was a great atmosphere.  We enjoyed ourselves and the food was delicious.

After dinner we headed back to our B & B, we are both tired, I am looking forward to a long sleep tonight.
