Day 84, 11 August 2019, Scotland Day 18, Glasgow to Edinburgh

Our last self drive travel day, ? and our last full day in Scotland ?

It’s about 70 miles to drive today, but first we started with a drive around the Glasgow University end of town, we hadn’t seen any of this area. There was a bit of light rain around, but that wasn’t stopping us.

We spent about an hour and a bit walking in and around the university. There are many magnificent old buildings, featuring spires, towers and grassed quadrangles. It had a feel of a place of learning about it, the buildings and atmosphere oozed knowledge, old knowledge, There were quite a few groups having tours around the university. We walked through to the gardens adjacent to the rear of the uni and walked along the Kelvin River for a bit. Fittingly, we could hear bagpipes being played nearby as we walked in the gardens.

We left Glasgow on the M8 bound for Edinburgh, along the way all the highway notification screens were showing a “Yellow Warning” for Heavy Rain Forecast. I think that is just an all year warning they have here! ? The drive was pretty easy until the last 2 miles. Road works ground the traffic to a crawl, the last 2 miles to the car rental yard took about 20 minutes.

We arrived safely and handed the car back with no issues. We got a cab to our hotel, the cab had the same traffic problems we encountered. The driver was good and friendly, and we have organised to be picked up tomorrow morning by him to take us to the airport.

Taxi Driver tip for all the punters out there. Scotland will leave the UK at the next referendum. (And it’s about time, so he says. ?)

For those interested, so far on our holiday we have driven a total of 9367km in England, Iceland and Scotland. We did most km’s in Scotland, 4104km, followed by England, 3250km, and finally Iceland, 2013km. All that in 63 days!, an average of 148km per day.

After check-in we had lunch at the hotel and then spent a quiet afternoon relaxing. We have a garden view room, it is very relaxing looking out onto some greenery and hearing the rain on the roof.
