This holiday thing is getting way too stressful 🤣 so we are having an easy day today.
Breakfast at 8am and a walk into town at about 9:30am to meet up with our Sailing captain for our day sailing around the Pakleni Islands. I’m glad we are rule “followers”, they’re a bit strict here in Hvar!
Our captain’s name is Rocco, a youngish laid back sort of guy.
We set out at 10am under motor, there wasn’t really any wind. As we got out of Hvar Harbour Rocco pointed out a small island to our left, it was a rocky outcrop with a lighthouse on it, this was the most eastern of the Pakleni Islands. After about 15 mins under motor, the wind came up as a gentle breeze and the sails were unfurled, the mainsail and the forward sail. It was a gentle way to cruise the islands, no sound other than the lapping of the water, the background music(Credence), quiet chat of the passengers and our captain on the phone!
But we were sailing!. The last sailing trip we did, in Greece, was all under motor, no sail at all.
Thankfully the phone was put away after a while. At 11.30am we stopped for a swim in a small bay. There were lots of small fish (25cm) around the boat, attracted by biscuit feeding.
I hit the water, the snorkelling was good. Super clear water and no rubbish anywhere. There were small fish near sea grasses, but no other sea life to be seen as I swam around the bay area near the boat. I tried hand feeding the fish near the boat, they would take food left in the water but not from my hands.
One of the other people on our boat tried SUP(Stand Up Paddle boarding ) with the board on the boat. He did OK. When he finished I thought I should give it a go, it might be my only chance! I sort of did ok , I was up standing on the board paddling much longer than I was off it. It was a bit of fun and I guess I surprised myself a bit. That’s now ticked off the bucket list!
We had lunch at the same place as yesterday. Our server even remembered us! Today we had grilled octopus and fried squid with green salad.
It was so much better than yesterday. Our group (8) sat together at the one table, it was interesting chatting with them about their travels and swapping stories.
We left lunch at 2:40pm and sailed out of the bay. There were many amazing boats in the bay on the way out. Our captain told us you can tell the multimillionaires boats from the billionaires boats very easily, the billionaires boats are least 4 decks high.
It was all sails back up for the cruise back to port.
The wind really dropped just across the channel from the harbour, so the sails went away and we finished our day under motor. It was a very gentle, slow sail back.
We cruised into port a bit after 4pm, we said good bye to our group. It was gelato time. We got to the gelato shop and went straight in, I got our gelato and when I came out there was a line about 10 deep to get in! We sat on the dock and ate our ice reams (channelling Otis), and then walked back to our hotel. The end of a relaxing day.
