A new day, a new city.
Today was all about getting to Valencia.
Our transfer driver arrived at 8:30 for our 9am transfer to the airport. No pressure!!!!
We were at the airport a bit before 9:30, and thankfully we were able to check our luggage in for our midday flight. We both dislike long waits at airports.
Our flight was flagged as boarding at 11:10, they lied. We didn’t board until 12. Our aircraft was an Bombardier CRJ1000 in a 2 x 2 seating configuration, a longish skinny plane.
We were in the air at 12:38 for our planned 35, or is that 19min flight. Well the pilot got his 19 min flight wrong! We are glad that’s all, lol.
We landed at 1:07. A 29 min flight.
Seville was very different from the air, many of it’s buildings are tall, greater than 5 storey’s
The ground was wet but it wasn’t raining.
We got our bags and met our driver, and were at our hotel a bit after 2pm.
We settled into our room (we have been extremely lucky so far, at all our hotels our rooms have been ready for us, even arriving hours early!) then went back to reception to get a map and ideas for what was around us.
So we headed out to checkout the neighbourhood and look for some lunch. We were told of a local market that had many cafes and bars around it. We must gave looked like we could do with a drink!
We called into a supermarket and got a few things and then walked to the market, Mercat Colon. The market was under a large decorative iron/steel roof structure. There were craft stalls, bars, cafes, restaurants, a delicatessen with amazing produce, Jamon (200 euro/kg) and the best smelling cheese section we have been in for a long time. They were selling Bollinger at the front of the store, yes, it was that type of shop!!
We found a cafe that looked good, but when we sat at a table we noticed we were surrounded by smokers (a European thing, they smoke EVERYWHERE!), so we left.
That wasn’t a bad thing, we found almost right next-door a wonderful pastry shop. We left the shop with a few savoury pastries, we declined the sweet ones (save them for tomorrow).
The buildings in Valencia appear to be 17th / 18th century, rectangle buildings of five or six storeys and small wrought iron clad balconies. The same type of beautiful buildings we have seen all over Portugal and Spain, just bigger/higher.
We walked back to our hotel along side the Jardin del Turia. A 9km long urban park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe at 130 hectares. Its a beautiful lush green space, and is crossed by many bridges. We were drawn to an old stone bridge, Ponte del Mar ( Bridge of the Sea). Its a pedestrian bridge built between 1592 & 1596 and when it was built was the main route from the city to the sea.
We have only been in this city for a very short time and have already discovered there is so much more here that we knew.
We start exploring a bit tomorrow.
