European countries are closing down to try and slow the spread of Omicron Covid-19. Portugal is to close bars and nightclubs, Germany is further limiting social gatherings, Scotland and Wales are tightening restrictions, and the list goes on.

Meanwhile in England, Boris Johnson is saying there will be no new restrictions introduced before Christmas.. as the UK records over 90,000 new cases in a day.

Data from the UK is suggesting that hospitalisations due to Omicron Covid-19 is 40% less than for Delta.

The UK has reported almost 120,000 new cases of Covid-19 overnight, a new record.

Covid has come to our family. A granddaughter has been deemed a close contact, she and her family have to be tested and the extended family Christmas lunch planned for their place has been “postponed”.

Globally the number of new cases reported sems to be low, this probably due to the “Sunday effect*” and Christmas Day

    • Sunday Effect= There is a pattern where case number drop on weekends, particularly Sundays, which I put down to a combination of lower test numbers and slower processing of tests.

Australia has [passed 300,000 cases of Covid-19, the last 10000 cases in 1 day and the last 50,000 cases in 7 days and the last 100,000 new cases in 31 days.

The USA has passed 53 million case of Covid-19, the last million in 5 days

The USA now accounts for 1 in every 4 daily new deaths due to Covid-19

Ethiopia has reported its highest daily number of new Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, with over 3700 new cases.

Covid-19 testing laboratories are in meltdown across the eastern side of Australia as the number of people queuing up for tests skyrockets. In NSW the time to get results is now over 72hrs, in SA it is between 24 and 48hrs.

People are now being told they were close contacts at exposure sites some 4 to 5 days after the exposure.

WA continues to record new cases, all related to the unvaccinated Backpacker that arrived in the state.

NSW has recorded a new daily high record of 6288 cases on Christmas Day.

South Australia’s new Covid-19 cases rose by almost 1000 overnight.

Airlines around the world are cancelling flights due to lack of flight and ground crews as the pandemic spurred on by Omicron takes another turn.

Health systems are also suffering from staff shortages due to Omicron.

RAT (Rapid Antigen Test) kits are set to be released throughout Australia as state governments try to move people away from the more precise, and time consuming pathology nasal swab test.

France has recorded pandemic high daily new cases of Covid-19 over 104,000.

Ireland has reported its pandemic high daily new cases of Covid-19 over 13,700.

The Chinese city of Xian is seeing Covid-19 cases rising despite efforts of the Chinese Government to contain the outbreak.

The Victorian Health Department sent unclear text messages to 999 people with respect to their requirement to get tested and isolate after being in contact with a Covid positive person.

France and England are resisting lock-downs in the face of rapidly increasing Covid-19 cases.

In the USA Dr Fauci is warning Americans not to become complacent in the face of rapidly rising and spreading Covid-19.

There are moves in NSW to cut isolation times for those infected with Covid-19 in line with what is happening in other parts of the world as it shifts to home isolation for its infected population.

Omicron seems to be affecting more children that other variants with more children being hospitalised around the world with the variant.

In Victoria they are seeing case number increase but the rate of hospitalisation is falling.

NSW is turning people away from testing stations if they have mild or no symptoms or need a PCR test to enter another state, concentrating instead on testing clinically serious cases.

National Cabinet is holding an urgent meeting today to discuss a new definition for “Close Contacts”. The proposal from the federal government is anyone who has spent 4 hours or more with a confirmed case of Covid-19 to be deemed a Close Contact.

The Federal government has said it will pick up half the cost of RAT.

The UK and France have both recorded new daily case records, over 183000 and 200000 respectively.

Spain has cut the isolation period for infected people to 7 days.

The CD is the USA is investigating another 86 cruise ships for reported Covid-19 outbreaks.

The USA has set another record for new daily Covid-19 cases, with over 267,000 new cases.

Scotland has reported record case numbers of Covid-19, with over 15900 cases.
