The new worrying variant of the Coronavirus coming out of southern Africa has been given the name Omicron (after initially being called the “Mu” variant.

There is mixed reaction about the new variant among experts around the world. It will be a wait and see, situation until someone says “I told you so”!

Many countries around the world are implementing travel bans from South Africa and other southern African nations.

Pfizer expects to have data on the effectiveness of its vaccine against the Omicron Variant in 2 weeks.

OMICRON is the new global buzz word, as fear grips the globe.

The world has passed 261 million cases of Covid-19, the last million in just under 2 days

The number of new daily Covid-19 infection in South Korea has reached a new pandemic high of over 3500 cases.

WA has effectively shut its borders to SA, now requiring anyone entering from South Australia to do 14 days quarantine.

Australia has shut its borders to non-citizens/residents returning from nine south African countries which are the focus of the Omicron variant.

NSW has 2 people in quarantine who have arrived in the state from southern Africa via Doha, both have tested positive to Covid-19, and their tests are now being genomically examined to determine the Coronavirus variant involved.

South Australia has stepped up its Covid-19 requirements for people entering the state. People from NSW. Vic and ACT have to isolated for 72hrs and get tested. International travellers must now quarantine for 14 days.

OMICRON has now been detected in South Africa, Hong Kong, Israel, Belgium UK, Germany and Botswana, with many more cases suspected throughout Europe, including in Germany, UK and the Netherlands.

The first known sample of Omicron was collected on 9 November 2021 in South Africa. The strain has at least 30 mutations involving the spike [proteins on the virus and is thought to be highly transmissible. The number of cases of this variant appears to be increasing in almost all provinces of South Africa.

South Africa has a vaccination rate of less than 36% of its eligible population fully vaccinated.

I wonder what would have happened if the developed world had lived up to its promises and helped vaccinate the African Continent. Is this Karma?

All developed nations are worried about the Omicron variant and are reintroducing tightened control measures.

To state the obvious, it is fear that Omicrons impact will be in those countries with the lowest vaccination rates, ie the developing world.

The Omicron Variant is said to be less severe than the Delta strain but with a much longer and deeper fatigue element.
