6 January 2022  Thursday

227 (223) countries and territories now have cases of Covid-19, 198 have reported deaths.

Tonga was the last country to report its first Covid-19 case.

There have been big changes in Australia around testing for, and therefore reporting of, Covid-19 cases. The country is moving away from PCR Testing of anyone who is at least mildly symptomatic, and in some cases asymptomatic, to PCR Testing only those who have definite symptoms of Covid-19. Everyone else is being told to use a RAT (Rapid Antigen Test). Further if your RAT comes up positive there is no requirement to get a PCR to confirm, you just have to self isolate. There is no strict rule that you even have to report your positive test.

Hence the case number statistics coming out of Australia from today are going to be unreliable. I will monitor them for the next few weeks, if they are misleading I will drop them and likely replace them with hospitalisation numbers as a better indication of how the country is going.
