Saturday 5 March 2011 Port Broughton, a long weekend in early March.

Left home around 9am and dropped Aiko off at Carly’s for a long weekend playing with Hanako, Ethan and Ella.

We had a very easy drive up to Yorke Peninsula, it’s only about 180km and 2 hours from home.

We had a walk around Kadina, an old country town established during the Copper mining days of Yorke Peninsula, and then went down to Wallaroo for lunch.

We called into a bakery and picked up a pie and Cornish pasty for lunch.  The pie was ordinary, but the pasty was great, a tradition left over from the Cornish miners that moved here for the mines.

We got to the Port Broughton Caravan Park a bit before1pm, and checked in.

We are up here with Tom and Vonnie (Deb’s sister and her husband) for a few days of fishing and relaxation.

Our cabins overlook the bay, and it’s very serene, with birds chirping and a beautiful mirrored waterway to sit and take in. The skies are blue, it’s warm and looks like a few great days ahead. The cabins are very clean  and tidy with all the essentials.

Tom and Von have brought their boat up and there is a good long jetty to crab from, so we are hopeful of a bountiful weekend of fishing.

Went to the jetty in the afternoon with hopes of getting some crabs and maybe some squid. Best we did was a couple of small crabs. Threw them back and guessed we would do much better from the boat tomorrow morning.

It was soon beer o’clock and we retired for the afternoon. The views of the setting sun from our cabin are magic.

6pm dinner at a good looking restaurant, Palate 2 Palette, and maybe a few ports and Kahluas in the cabin tonight to round out the day.

We shared a Seafood Platter for dinner and Von and Tom had a curry and a Seafood Crepe all washed down with the house recommended wine “Grey Nomad” Sav Blanc.

You would have thought the Seafood Platter should have been a winner up here, but we were disappointed, not using fresh ingredients is a crime in this part of the world. Tom and Vonnie were happy with their meals. The waiter was pushing the locally grown steak, maybe we should have listened.

The Beers, port and Kahlua on our deck watching the sunset and the vast array of stars come out at night was very relaxing.
