Thursday 7th March 2013 Queenstown to Fox Glacier 330km

After a wonderful stay in Queenstown, it was time to head out this morning to Fox Glacier.

We were all packed up and on the road around 8am.   The roads are very windy and it takes longer to get anywhere here, so after a few stops we figured it would be around 6 hours to travel that distance.
First stop was Lake Wanaka, the lakes here are magnificent surrounded by mountains and this was no exception.   I drove for a few hours after this stop.   Was such a great drive, most of the way we were driving alongside lakes and mountains, I had the music up loud, was in my element!   Felt like I was channeling you Ash!! 🙂   We stopped for photos along the way, and had a very ordinary lunch at Haast.
Greg drove the rest of the way, when we got near Fox Glacier we did a rainforest walk down to the river and could see the Glacier in the distance, it felt odd walking in Rainforest so close to the glacier, it only happens here and in South America.   Afterwards we drove to Fox Glacier and did a 30 minutes walk up to it.
“The largest and longest of the West Coast glaciers, Fox Glacier ends in rainforest just 250 meters above sea level and 12km from the sea. It is 13km long and 350 metres deep.”    I was glad we did the walk, was much more impressive up close.
Around 4ish we checked into our B & B for the night, I didn’t do so well with this one, but it is in a nice setting, Mt Cook & Tasman are on one side and cows on the other!   And the bed is comfortable 🙂
After settling in we headed out to dinner and as we finished Mt Cook finally appeared out of the clouds, got a few pictures, but I was more enamored by the Highland cows in the paddock, they are a lovely brown colour with lots of hair??  Not sure what cows have but it was quite long 🙂   Anyhow I have lots of pictures of them, will post some when we get home.
Then we took a walk around Lake Matheson, on the other side of the lake you can get the reflection of the mountains in the lake.   We were lucky the lake was still and we have many a photo!!     It was a lovely walk in Rainforest.
We are quite tired tonight, hoping to be asleep before midnight, as we have a very long day ahead of us tomorrow, heading to Nelson at the top of the South Island.   So I will say goodnight.  Sending you our love from NZ. xo
