Australia  The East Bit   Day 31 and 32  Clairview to Rockhampton to Seventeen Seventy  Qld           5 and 6 Aug 2016

Day 31  Clairview to Rockhampton Qld   5 Aug 2016  206km

We had an easy drive down from Clairview to our caravan park on the banks of the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton. We arrived around 11am and after setting the van up we headed into town to have a bite of lunch and have a bit of a look around.

Rockhampton is a typical country Australian town, big wide streets and many of the old buildings from its past retained, most in very good condition. We guessed that the history went back to the mid to late 1800’s. (Wikipedia tells me it was 1858).

After lunch our walk was pretty centred around Ingress, we had a lot of fun going around the city and making our mark on the town. We met a few players from both sides as we made our way around town. It was a relaxing fun afternoon.

We finished our afternoon out watching the sunset over the Fitzroy River, very pretty.

We eventually had to get back to the real world, and did a bit of top up shopping. I have been looking for and old fashion fly swatter for about a week now, nope, they just don’t seem to exist. 🙁

We dropped all the shopping back in the van and went to McDonalds to update all the apps on our phones and tablets. The wifi connection was very slow. We cut back the up-dates to important apps and had a choc-top ice-cream while we waited.

We had decided on pizza for tea and Deb had found the best pizza place in town using Trip Advisor, a place called Pacinos Italian Restaurant.  The restaurant was very busy, but the woman at the front desk was just amazing. She was one of the owners, we asked about the size of their pizzas and if we would need one or two. She simply said, do you like anchovies, we both said yes, and she replied that she would have them make a pizza that they ate. After a little more ingress, we waited on the “lounge” inside as she had asked us to do. 🙂

We took the pizza back to the van to eat. It was amazing, the best pizza we have ever had. YUM. And it was just enough for both of us. As the saying goes, if you’re ever in Rockhampton, do yourself a favour and head to this place, their pasta dishes looked incredible as well.

Day 32   Rockhampton to Seventeen Seventy  Qld    6 Aug 2016  230km

We both woke early this morning, Deb about 4:30 and me around 5. After breakfast, we packed the van up as much as we could, only the power was left connected and then we went out and topped up our Ingress and PoGo inventories,  and filled the car ready for the days drive down to Seventeen Seventy (1770.)

We got away around 8:30 and had an easy drive south. The roads have been generally very good throughout Queensland, and as part of that you have to put up with the occasional road works, and we got a couple of those on our drive today.

We are staying at the council CP at 1770, which is right out near the end of the peninsula that the town sits on. While we couldn’t get a beach side site, we have scored a view to the ocean down a path right across the road from our van.

1770 was named after the year in which Cpt James Cook first landed here, and is the site of the first recorded landing of Europeans in Queensland.

We had some lunch then went for a drive around 1770 and Agnes Water.  Yes, a good bit of Ingressing was done. J As we have said before, Ingress uses sites of note as an integral part of the game, so we actually see a wider area that we might otherwise miss if not for the game. We called in at the marina to see where the wharf was (we have booked an amphibious “Duck” tour for Monday afternoon and this is where we have to meet them). We passed a nice looking bar and restaurant a short distance from the CP, I guess we just might have to try it, and we also took a drive up a bit of a hill, the views were very good down over the inlet/river.

We finished the afternoon sitting on the beach watching the sun go down over both the water and land, the views are stunning here.   Another magic day. 🙂
