Australia The East Bit  Day 34  Seventeen Seventy  Qld      8  Aug 2016   16km

Hello, Deb here.   I woke rather early this morning 2.30am!!  Even a bit early for me.   I was only awake for 2 hours then got another 3 hours, so not too bad 🙂

We had a lovely walk this morning along the beach and through the Sir Joseph Banks Conservation Park, saw a monument to Captain Cook  who landed here in 1770 (he was Lieutenant Cook at the time, evidently Qld is the only place that recognises this, everyone else refers to him as Captain Cook).   The scenery was lovely.   We walked back along the road, there were lots of big homes up on the hill taking advantage of the great views.

Just before lunch we headed up to the Agnes Water Tavern and had lunch and watched the Men’s 4×100 freestyle final, there was no sound on the TV so I put the ABC broadcast on my phone so we could hear what was happening.

Later this afternoon we did a LARC tour.   LARC stands for lighter amphibious resupply cargo, see picture below (notice I am rugged up and Greg, well!!).   It was made in 1966 in America, it goes in the water and over land and can climb up a 60 degree incline.   And it was pink 🙂

Our guide was Blake he was lots of fun.   We saw birds – pied oystercatchers, a white bellied sea eagle and hundreds of little blue soldier crabs that walk forward (instead of side ways) scurrying along the sand.

Two years ago Cyclone Marcia dumped 3metres of sand in the bay, it now has very large sand bars when the tide goes out, made it perfect for being in the LARC.

Before heading back in we saw another beautiful sunset, it took over an hour for the colours in this one to fade, was gorgeous.

The weather is still being kind to us, low 20’s now and lots of blue sky.
