Day 52, 10th July 2019, Shrewsbury to Portinscale, Keswick via Fenton & Biddulph

We have enjoyed our last 10 days with family & friends. Great catching up with everyone. We were well nourished in every sense of the word. ?

This morning we said our goodbyes to Monica & Len.  We decided we would stop at Blackpool on the way. At one of the first complicated roundabouts we took the wrong exit and found ourselves going 30 minutes out of our way ?our GPS is pretty good, but we are not fans of the voice, so have had her turned off for the last 4 weeks.  We put her back on after that detour ?

As with most detours it opened up other opportunities.   I saw Biddulph on the map, and found it had a very good National Trust garden, so we decided to visit.   Then we noticed the town of Fenton a few minutes from where we were.   So we headed there, but there wasn’t much to see, looked quite rundown and I couldn’t find anything to go and have a look at. How funny, 10 miles from Biddulph ?

The drive into Biddulph was beautiful and the Biddulph Grange Garden was delightful.

The lady who greeted us was impressed to know that Greg was a Biddolph, she described the gardens to us in detail and said it was like Alice in Wonderland, and it was. It was designed by James Bateman 1842-68 and expresses his interest in science, religion and horticulture.   He has created many garden rooms and the Geological Gallery is interesting and the only one of its kind in the world.  We had fun exploring. I highly recommend this garden if you are in the area and have a National Trust Membership which you can join in Australia.

After leaving the garden we decided we wouldn’t bother going to Blackpool.   We got on the M6, after a while we noticed on google maps that the M6 had a long section that was running slow so we took a detour, probably took the same amount of time but we got to drive through villages rather than being at a standstill on the M6.

We got to the Lakes District around 2pm.  Was a beautiful hours drive to our accommodation in Portinscale.  The scenery was stunning.   Can’t wait to explore.  When we mentioned during our travels that we were going to the Lakes District, most people commented that it was their favourite.  I can see why.  This will take some beating.

After we settled into our B&B, we walked to the local pub for dinner, then we had a walk around the village and down to the lake, even looked for red squirrels but couldn’t find one.

We are going to walk into Keswick tomorrow and have a look around the lake.
