December 2021      And then there was Omicron

In the last month the world has seen over 23 million new cases of Covid-19 and over 202 thousand people have died of the disease.

Australia has had over 178 thousand new cases of Covid-19 and 213 deaths due to it.

The Omicron Variant has seen the numbers of new cases surge all around the world and particularly noticeable for us here in Australia.  In South Australia our case numbers went from under 1000 to over 8000 in the month! Thankfully the death rate didn’t follow the same rise.

Australia seems to be facing a crisis in health care this month, if we can struggle through January we should be ok, I hope.

We have had our booster vaccination after being informed that the AZ vaccine had basically worn off.

In other news, we started the month by getting our shingles vaccinations, we had a family friend who contracted shingles in his late 7-0’s and it wasn’t nice. I had a car crash one Wednesday on the way to pick “granddaughter” up from school. A car came through a give-way sign on me! The car is still drivable and will be repaired in mid February. (Crash repairers are so busy). We went to the Ashes 2nd Test (cricket match between Aust and England) at Adelaide Oval. It was a bit strange being in a big crowd, everyone was meant to wear face masks all the time except when eating/drinking, but it wasn’t enforced. Australia won the match in 4 days. Christmas lunch was going to be at eldest sons home, but eldest granddaughter became a close contact at 3 separate venues, so had to isolate, so the lunch was cancelled and we finished up having lunch with eldest daughter and her family, and it was very enjoyable. In very sad news my aunt unexpectedly died aged 90, very sad for all our family especially my mum (her twin) her husband and youngest daughter. Our youngest daughter announced that she and her partner were expecting a baby, due in late June, so happy for them and us. We finished the year staying at Kensington Gardens, “looking after” grandchildren (14 & 15) and their dogs. It was lots of fun being there with them all.

We finished the year with Crayfish and prawns with salad at home together.

I live in the hope that this virus will mutate into something less virulent and we can begin to get our lives back to more 2019 normal.

In the 12 months of 2021;

  • The world had over 202 million new cases of Covid-19. The USA, India, Brazil, UK & Russia accounted for over 90 million of those cases.
  • Australia had over 361 thousand new cases of Covid-19
  • The world had suffered over 3.6 million new deaths due to Covid-19, The USA, India, Brazil, UK & Russia accounted for over 1.56 million of those deaths.
  • Australia had 1.315 deaths due to Covid-19

The developed world is yet to address the lack/very low rates of vaccination in the developing world.

The pandemic deniers and antivaxxers are still, if not more vocal as they were at the start of the year.

Under the current surge in the Omicron Covid-19 variant it is the unvaccinated that are suffering the most hospitalisations and deaths, the difference in percentage terms between the 2 cohorts is staggering.

The Omicron Variant has been said to have come out of southern Africa. South Africa appears to have seen the peak of its most recent surge in Covid-19 cases and the number of new daily cases is dropping significantly. There appears to be hope in the near future.
