Day 42 27 June 2023 London

For a moment I contemplated titling today “A London Western”, with us having a late Indian lunch and seeing Oklahoma tonight, but I guess that wouldn’t be very “PC”, would it, so I didn’t. 🙈🤣

We had a bit of a lazy morning. I went out late morning, played a bit of Ingress, saw some sights and did a small shop, Deb only got 3 hours sleep last night, she managed to add one more while I was out!Walking around the retail area of Mayfair is an experience in opulence. All of the big name shops are here; Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, etc. I walked through an arcade, at least 120m long full of jewellery and bespoke clothing shops, past the Royal Academy of Arts, lots of very nice looking restaurants etc. I made my way down to Piccadilly Circus and then up Regent St. Yes, that Monopoly theme is happening again! It’s all so interesting and very different from home. So many different establishments have doormen (yes, men, I’m yet to see a doorwoman), it very rare to see that at home. It has taken us getting to London before we have seen any homelessness and people begging on the streets. It seems in the parts of Europe we were in, they look after the vulnerable, unlike here or at home.

I finished my walk with a call into Mark’s & Spencer’s to do a little bit of shopping. If M&S are the future of our supermarkets it will be a shame. Their brand name products fill the shelves, with little to no other choices and the majority of their “fresh” produce, fruit & vegetables, are packaged.

We had a late lunch booked at Darjeeling Express, a restaurant Deb had discovered that is owned and run by a woman, who only employs female chefs/cooks. We had a little trouble finding it, google maps don’t go well in high-rise, and then the restaurant was tucked away in the corner of a courtyard full of eateries, on the 2nd floor!! I mean who looks up that high in a courtyard!
We were so glad we found it. The food was delicious, easily the best Indian food we have had in years! Deb has put up a picture of our meal on our Facebook picture blog, as they say a picture is worth a 1000 words, so to save yourself some reading, have a look here, https://www.facebook.com/Greganddebstravelblog . We left the restaurant with a doggie bag of leftovers, tomorrow’s lunch.

We had a quiet afternoon before we set out to see Oklahoma, a modernised version of the Broadway classic. It ran for two and a half hours plus an intermission.

We both really enjoyed Oklahoma. The staging was really stripped back, very minimalistic, the costumes were sort of modern western. The production was very provoking. We both enjoyed the energy and quality of all the actors, everyone played their parts very well. I found the ending, bizarre, Deb not so much, but then she knew the ending, I didn’t. We both thought the 8 piece ensemble were brilliant and added so much to the show. The violinist especially looked like she enjoyed every note.
We both absolutely recommend seeing the show if you get the opportunity.

Walking home from the show was lots of fun too. Deb thought we would have been the “most senior “, lol, out and about in London. I doubt it, but it was a fun thought. So many people out on the streets at 10:30pm on a Tuesday, and none of them looked like they were going home any time soon. Unlike us!!!

And that my friends was the end of another enjoyable day in London.
