17 February 2014 Coffin Bay

Well the birds, that mix of Galahs and Corellas finally went quiet a little before 9pm last night, it just became eerily quiet and we didn’t hear a chirp from them until we woke after 7am (well when Deb woke, I slept through until more like 8am 🙂  )

We had a slow morning, I went up and got some bait and a piece of cake for later while Deb read her e-paper. Then I got all my kayak stuff organised and ready to roll on down to the little beach close by us.

I hopped on the net and found some good info on the Fisheries SA site, explaining what Tommy Ruffs look like and the differences between Tommies and juvenile Salmon. (It’s all in the eyes and the fin colour!  LOL)  At about 10:30am I set off for some fishing.  Apparently when I go out fishing it is normally for about 2 ½ to 3 hours, so when I got back at 5:45pm  Deb wasn’t impressed! She was worried that I may have been fish food somewhere.  I have since worked out how to set a spare watch I found in the van and will be wearing it whenever I go fishing from hence forth!!

But I digress, the fishing, 🙂 , I paddled over to the far side of the waterway we are on and anchored near shore but just in the channel. The tide and wind were against each other which made fishing a little tricky, the kayak was being blown one way and the current was taking my line the other. It wasn’t long and I was reeling in some nice looking, but just undersize KG Whiting. I reckon I must have caught around 10, and all were under size. It’s really hard throwing back whiting that are just under 30cm long!! Throw in a couple of under size flatheads and this bright blood red fish that I had no idea what it was and things were looking promising but without luck. I finally caught a keeper, a Tommy!! Yes, I checked its eyes, looked good to me, checked its fins, clear where they were meant to be and black tips on the tail, and not a sign of yellow!! I was a happy boy!  Lol  All that over a fish that was the smallest I had landed all morning!! Yep, It was a massive almost 20cm!!. Things went off the boil there so I made my way back across the water, stopping and trying a few places on the way with absolutely no bites. Finally I got back to an area I had fished yesterday, but this time I had “the knowledge”!  I had lots of fun here, getting bites with every cast, all from Tommies and juvenile Salmon, I even got another undersize flathead.  I finished up with about 8 Tommies for the day, jeez these things are hard to fillet, really fiddly. I just may have to seek advice from Tom and Justin (my fisho brothers-in-law 🙂 )

Besides worrying about me, bless her heart, Deb spent the day reading and relaxing. I might take her out tomorrow and see if we can find somewhere to buy some local oysters, after all, this place is famous for them!

After a delicious tea of Tommies and salad we settled back for a relaxing evening.

It seems nephew Brian and Amy are having a great time in Thailand, and it’s good to see that Craig and his family all got away on their holiday to Thailand as well.  A late Happy Birthday to Caitlin. Thailand must be the place to go to these days, seems everyone is doing it. 🙂
