20 February 2014 Coffin Bay

Our last full day here got off to an early start, we woke at 7 and 8am respectively, yes I was last one up.  🙂

After fluffing around for a while I was out fishing at about 10, and Deb stayed in the van glued to her paper and book.

I paddled straight across the bay to try my luck at a place I went to the other day. Within 5 mins of anchoring I had pulled in a couple of KG Whiting around 34cm and was getting lots of bites. I fished that area for the next 2 ½ hrs and got another 5 KGs and 3 fat Tommies. I guess I landed and threw back at least 8 under size KGs, some were just a couple of cm too small! It was lots of fun. I then started my way back to shore, but first stop was up beside the island on the other side of the channel I had been fishing in. As I paddled up, I saw a guy in a little tinnie haul in a Snook that must have been close to a metre long!  He was spinning with a really whippy rod and light tackle by the look of it, I have never seen a rod bend so much before, it was a great fight to get the Snook into the boat!

Anyway I anchored again and caught a few more under size KGs and then I got a big hit as I was winding in, a nice little 30cm salmon had jumped on my line.

Enough was enough, and I paddled back to shore and started cleaning my catch. There isn’t anything to clean your catch on at the beach I launched from, so I had to make do with the bottom of my bucket! After a back braking 40 mins my catch was clean and filleted, the 8 pelicans had been given some treats and the mix of large gulls and seagulls got some trimmings.

I got back, and asked Deb what she’d like for tea. Trust her to ask for Flathead!! lol, the only one I didn’t get.   Bacon and eggs for tea tonight so I batched the fish up into meal size portions and put my catch into the freezer.

We leave here tomorrow, so the mid afternoon was spent cleaning  the bird poo off the van, and packing away my kayak and fishing gear.

It has been great staying here, it’s one of the best places we have stayed at. The Bay is beautiful, so picturesque and very relaxing. Deb even raised the prospect of coming back here next year for a couple of weeks in March, I will have to get that onto the calendar at home! 🙂

Tomorrow we start heading our way back towards home. We are undecided if we will drive straight to Port Broughton on the Yorke Peninsula (it has taken me this long of proof reading to work out what was wrong with Peninsular!!), and have three nights there, or drive within an hour or so of there and have an easier day on the road.   My bet is we make it to Port Broughton. 🙂
