Halls Gap, The Grampians, Victoria 12 -17 October 2014.

This year it is Ella and Ethan’s turn to do the Grampians with us, following in the footsteps of their cousins, Dante and Tessa, whom we brought here in Nov 2010.

As they are missing a week of school to be here with us they have to write a journal about their travels. Ella is already well into hers, so we thought rather that us write these blog entries we would reproduce Ella’s story.

We hope you enjoy our adventures with our grandchildren as seen through their eyes, well Ella’s anyway! 🙂

The adventure begins ……

Traveling.

We’ve just started driving to the Grampians in Victoria. It took me ages to pack all my stuff. I paked two bags, one with stuff to do and one with my clothes and my toothbrush. After I finally got my bags all packed I got dressed. After that I put my bags in Nanny and Pa’s caravan.

I helped mum set the table outsidefor lunchand then we sat down and ate the food. Mum had made some buns and she had a platter of stuff to put on oursandwiches, it was yummy.

Next we got the caravan ready. Finally we were ready, we all got in the carand Pa drove. We’re staying at Bordertown which is a small town near the border of South Australia and Victoria. It takes about 3 hours to drive to Bordertown and it’s about a 300km drive.

We have just gone over the Murray River and are close to the town Murray Bridge. We started at 2pm and will arrive at Bordertownat about 5pm.

We have driven an hour and it is now 3 o’clock. We are now driving through Tailem Bend which is another small town. I have seen lots and lots of animals like sheep, cows, horses and chickens. I’ve had lots of fun and I can’t wait to get to Bordertown and we get to sleepin the caravan.

Bordertown

Yesterday we arrived at Bordertown. It was a much more busy than any of the other towns. I knew we were there because there was a big sign saying, Welcome to Bordertown. We had to look awhile before we found the caravan park because it was on a side road. Finally we found the caravan park, but when we Pa and me got out of the car to pay we realised there was no one in the office. After that we looked at the timetable, it said Sat-Sun Open 9-5 and Mon-Fri Open 8:30-6. , it also had a notice saying if you come when we’re closed, please pay in the morning. Next we drove around looking for a site. We found it, we slowly went into the site.. Once we got ready we sat down in the caravan to have dinner, we had some chicken. After dinner I got dressedin my doughnut pyjamas. After that we watched the Block and X Factor while reading at the same time. Ethan played on Nanny’s tablet as well. Then we got into our sleeping bags, they were very comfy. Nanny and Pa gave us a hug and we fell asleep.

Entering Victoria.

In the morning we get ready, eat breakfast, brush our teeth and get dressed. We get in the car and start to drive. It’s only 18km to Victoria, which is about 10 minutes. When we get to the border we get outso we can take some pictures of us going over the borderto Victoria.

Is this a “Temporal Paradox”?
Or a bridging of States

We also foun a Geocache. Geocaches are small containersthat you go hunting for. They have little pieces of paper where you write your name on. We get in the car and keep driving, we pass lots of small towns including Kaniva, Nhill and Kiata.

We drive for a little while longer, Pa stops the car, he’s seen a pink lake!!!! It’s very windy outside the car. We get out to take some pictures of he pink lake. Pa said that it was pink because of a type of pink algae lived in the lake. Algae is a small plant that lives in moist areas.

The Pink Lake

After that we only drove past one more town. The town was called Horsham. Horsham was quite bigcompared with all the other towns. We had travelled abouthalf an hour more before we could see all the big hills and mountain of the Grampians

Did Ella mention the evil eyed giant Koala?

The Grampians

The Grampians are actually a group of big hills and mountains. There is also a big town here called Halls Gap. I think it’s called Halls Gap because Hall is the name of the person who found it and Gap because it’s a town made in the middle of two hill. Halls Gap is quite a big town but it hasn’t got lots of food or kitchen wear (ware) or other things like that.

There’s lots of kookaburras in the caravan park. There is a river next to our camp site. Ethan and me liked balancing on the rocks to the other side of the creek where we collected sticks for a fire. There were lots of kangaroos when it got dark

Climbing Hills

Today we climbed to the Pinnicle. We climbed from the Wonderland carpark. You can also climb from the Sundial carpark or you can walk from the caravan park. It was fun but I was very tired. Not to worry though, because we brought some snacks with us. I liked climbing up the rocks then jumping down again. Halfway we stopped near a waterfall to have a rest. We each had half an apple to eat and a drink of water. There were lots of steps to climb, which was very tiring. When we got to the top we had a crunchy and we looked at the beautiful view.

A panorama from The Pinnacle.

It was scary being up so high.  There was a crow at the top. It was all black and it looked a teeny bit scary. When we went down the hill we went through the Grand Canyon. I lied on rocks and pretended to be a lizard all the way down the hills. At the end Ethan and Nanny were in front and we accidently went the wrong way, but we found Nanny and Ethan in the endso it was OK.
