Sovereign Hill

Yesterday we went to Sovereign Hill. Sovereign Hill s a town set up to look like a town in the 1850’s. There was a main road that had lots of different shops on it. You were actually allowed to buy things in the shops. Higher on the hill were all the houses. The houses were much smaller than the housestoday and the toilets are outside.

Patting the “motor”

We looked in all the shops for a while and then we had some lunch. I had fish and chips with a raspberry spider. It was super yummy.

After lunch we went on a mine tour. The mine tour was aboutwhat mines looked like, what tools they used and the conditions they worked in.We all got in a kind of carriage. We went 30m into the ground while in pitch blackness so we got used to the dark. Once we got 30m into the groud we got out of the carriage. We went into another room. The man doing the tour said it was very dangerous work. Did you know it was warm under the ground because they were closer to the middle of the Earth?

Once we finished we went to see soldiers march. The soldiers had real guns but they shot only tissue out of them and they shot it where no one was standing. The guns were very loud and the tissues went on fire but it didn’t hurt anyone.

Next we went to the bowling alley. It was much different to the ones they have these days. The ball, skittles and alley were all made of wood. It made a big sound when you dropped the ball on the alley.

After that we had a look at the school. Some kids that had come for an excursion were being the class. The kids were wearing olden clothes and the teacher was carrying a cane where ever she went, but she didn’t wack anyine because they were just on an excursion and your not allowed to wack children with the cane anymore.

Next we went to see how gold is made into golden bars. They would melt the gold at a very hot temperature. Then they would put it in a mould until it cools down. They cool down quick. Once it’s solid they take it out and put it in  a bucket of water so you can hold it with out your fingers getting burnt. I got to hold the one he made, and it was worth about $160,000.

It’s mine, all mine!!!

After that we did some shopping and then went to the gold panning.

Panning for gold

I didn’t get any gold but it was fun anyway. After that we went to look at all the chinese tents. They had tents here t look for gold. The chinese were very hard working people and they found lots of gold. Threre were lots of types of tents. There was a hospital, a shop, a butcher, a drink tent and even a laundry.

Next we went into a smaller mineby ourselves. The mine showed how the miner found the second biggest piece of gold in the world. The gold was called the Welcome Nugget. It was called the Welcome Nugget because if you found it, it was worth so much money that you would never have to work again

Next we went to another shop and went home.

We liked to jump over the water onto rocks. When we got home we played a game of Skip-Bo.

Tomorrow we go home. It will take around about 5 hours to get back home. We will stop at the border and have ham wraps for lunch.

I missed mum and dad, and I’m glad that I’m going home to see them soon.
