Australia – The East Bit Day 4 Erldunda to Yalara/Uluru 9 July 2016  242km

We eased our way into today.

I filled the car up with fuel and we packed the van up as much as possible before locking it all up and leaving it in Erldunda while we headed off to Uluru for a couple of nights.

Deb drove us all the way, it was nice to sit in the passenger seat and just enjoy the scenery. The earth is such a brilliant red around here.

About half way there we passed the faux “Ayres Rock”, Mount Conner. I still don’t understand why it isn’t a tourist destination, such a magnificent sight from the road.

We arrived at the Sails Resort around 12:30, and tried to check-in early, but our room wasn’t ready. So we had lunch in the bar area and got a call about half way through saying our room was ready, that made a couple of happy little vegemites! 🙂

We settled in and then went out to explore, first stop was Uluru, of course!   We got our day passes (which cover you for 2 days) and headed in. We have been here before so we had no real driving need to walk around the rock, so we took the easy option and drove around. We stopped at the sunset parking area to view the rock (and take out a large blue field – Ingress again! 🙂 ). We then headed to the Cultural Centre and had a walk around the exhibitions, they didn’t look too different from the last time we were here, 5 years ago, so it didn’t take us long to walk through. In the gift shop there I was surprised to see how the local “dot Art” paintings had lost integrity over the years. They aren’t as precise as they were, the dots merge into each other and they just look rushed. Capitalism has got the better of traditional art.

Before dinner we enjoyed the complimentary champagne they left in our room for my birthday (just over a week away).     We started celebrating a week ago, I am enjoying these celebrations.    We went to the Arngull Grill for dinner. Deb had snapper and I had skippy. Delicious.

After dinner we were walking back when Deb noticed a dazzling Jupiter right next to the crescent moon. And all the stars that fill an outback sky, I can’t wait to get away from all these lights and see the night skies as they really are, a shimmering array of distant worlds.

Good luck to nephew Brian playing for Country SA in a carnival down in Port Lincoln, finals tomorrow.  Stay safe Vonnie and Tom over in WA with the storms that are heading your way, enjoy the top end Barry and Sue (we might catch up over on the east coast?) and everyone else whatever you doing, do it well and enjoy. 🙂
