Australia – The East Bit – Day 5 Yalara / Uluru / Kata Tjuta 10 July 2016

We had an easy day.

Breakfast in the resort breakfast area was so busy, but the staff  were very efficient and the food was fresh and very good.

It rained about 13mm overnight and the grounds were wet with grey skies as we ventured out.  We made our way out to Uluru, hoping we might get the opportunity to see water cascading down from the top. While the roads were wet and some puddles deep, the rock was only damp. We were too late to see any waterfalls, if they happened. We got a few snaps of the rock with water marks on it and then headed out to Kata Tjuta, about 23km away.

It’s a very easy drive and we first went to Walpa Gorge for a short walk up to a viewing platform. The trail up there is very rocky, consisting of mainly a Breccia (a rock composed of rock fragments, in theis case mainly very round small boulders/stones, cemented together by a fine matrix – not unlike modern concrete in many ways) and it was very rough. About ½ way up the track we came across a guy in what can only be described as an All Terrain Wheelchair! It was amazing to watch him manoeuvre his way down the rocky track.

All the recent rains up this way have made the country side very green and creeks are flowing. We got to the end of the track and had a look around from the platform then walked back. We then drove around to the Valley of the Winds, and did a short walk up to Kura Lookout. This was the last portal in an Ingress Mission we had been doing. We spent some time up there taking in the views and taking a few pics, and then went back to the car. We started back to the resort, via the Kata Tjuta Dune Viewing area. We had hoped to get a better overall pic of the Kata Tjuta formation, but the lighting wasn’t good and the rocks were all in shadow.

We spent the later part of the afternoon doing some washing, yes you can never escape it, and had pizza for late lunch.

We are going to The Field of Light – Uluru tonight.   Tomorrow will be a quiet day driving north, I will save putting words to that experience until tomorrow.

So all that is left to be said is “ Palya!”
