10 to 15 August 2020 Victor Harbor, South Australia

We arrived down at Victor Harbor at about 2:30pm. The house was ready and we got straight in. The house we have is through a company called Petlet. They hire holiday homes where pets are welcome, and so we had Billie and Vince with us.

The house is an 1860’s cottage overlooking the sand dunes and straight out onto the bay between Granite Island and Victor Harbor. We look straight out at the causeway joining the mainland to the island. A beautiful view both day and night.

We settled in and took the dogs straight to the beach via a path through the bushes on the sand dunes, accessed by a gate in “our” backyard. We let the dogs off their leashes and they headed straight to the water and had fun running away from the small waves. Further down the beach they saw a pelican “fishing” where a creek went out to sea. They took off sooooo quickly and were both in the creek before we knew it. I was afraid they would get swept out to sea in the creek. So I gave Deb my phone and ran towards the creek. Lucky for me, and them, they were out of the water before I got there. A couple of very wet puppies. We eventually headed back up the beach and home for a good toweling down for the dogs.

We had a few quiet days. Went for a drive and did a little top up shop and a short walk around the horse drawn Tram depot and a bit of Ingress thrown in. We have a pool table in the house and had a couple of games, was fun.

On Thursday, Amy, called in with her new born baby Olive. It was really nice catching up with her and we both had a cuddle of Olive. Amy has moved down this way with her partner and looks like life is going really well for them. Late morning I went into Victor to meet a fellow Ingress player, played a bit around the village then went home for lunch. In the afternoon we finished off the last 2 episodes of season 3 of Ozark. In the middle of the afternoon a couple of very healthy looking rabbits came out of the bush in the backyard, they drove Billie nuts. It took ages to calm her.

I was woken by Deb and the dogs on Friday morning with the news that there was a mother and baby whale just off shore right in front of the house, they were all so excited!!! Me, I was still trying to figure out what was going on! After I gained consciousness we all walked down to the beach. The dogs were going nuts, so excited, it wasn’t pleasant for someone still half comatose. We waited for another man and his dog to pass then set the dogs free. They love the beach, chasing the waves and digging to find the source of those amazing smells they are discovering. The whales had moved a bit further out into the bay, but we still got a bit of a look at the logging along and the occasional bob up and down. Back up in the house for breakfast, after giving both dogs a good towel down. Deb was fixed watching the whales as they did whale things out from the house, more bobbing and logging. We headed down to Port Elliot for lunch at The Flying Fish Cafe. Had fish and chip overlooking Horseshoe Bay. Always very tasty. In the afternoon we went into Victor Harbor and played a bit of Ingress it is a much more Enlightened township now :-). Back at the cottage we relaxed on the back verandah taking in the view. And had a last game of pool.

We leave for home tomorrow. It’s been a good little getaway.

Saturday, we woke to no whales. I think they moved on down the coast to Port Elliot. After breakfast we packed and were on the road by 9:30am.
We cleaned up a few Ingress portals in Mount Compass and stopped off at Willunga for the Saturday Farmer’s Market. We walked around for a short while, enjoying the stroll with the dogs, who enjoyed saying hello to the other dogs they met. We had a smooth run home and were home and unpacked with the first load of washing on by 11:30am.

We had a great time and have booked the house again for mid Jan next year.
