December 2022 The World attempts to “Normalise”, China?, and the War continues

2022 in Numbers

The world had 377,994,775 new reported cases of Covid-19 with 1,251,438 reported deaths due to Covid-19.

Australia had 10,740,556 new reported cases of Covid-19 with 14,828 reported deaths due to Covid-19.

South Australia had 853,050 new reported cases of Covid-19 with 1,149 reported deaths due to Covid-19.

The world more than doubled the number of new Covid-19 cases and improved greatly in the mortality rate due to Covid-19, with less than 20% of total deaths in the year.

Covid-19 cases number in Australia exploded during the year, with the year recording over 28 times more cases than the previous 2 years combined and eight times as many deaths due to Covid-19. Australia comparatively had the worst Covid-19 numbers of the 10 countries I have been following, which includes 6 of the top 10 most infected countries.

Even closer to home, South Australia saw an almost 10 times increase in the number of reported Covid-19 cases this year compared to the 2 previous years, the death rate went up by a factor of 190 times, a bit over 22 deaths a week on average for the year. The daily number of people in hospital in SA doubled over the year.

And a step even closer to us.

Our extended family experienced 1 death due to Covid-19, 20 members of our family have had Covid-19. There are still 7 of us who haven’t had Covid-19 yet!

The Australian Stock Exchange ASX200 finished the year at 7038, 5.5% down on the start of the year (7444).

My Monthly commentary.

The biggest changes this month were in relation to China/. Early in the month the Chinese Government’s Zero Tolerance to Covid-19 came under enormous pressure with rarely seen street protests against the policy throughout some of its larger cities. By the end of December the Government had bowed to the pressure, although it communicated it in a far more dignified way, and has rapidly removed most if not all Covid-19 control policies.

The world added another 17 million reported new cases of Covid-19.

Hospitalisation rates throughout the world have begun rising rapidly again as controls are further reduced.

Australia announced the end of unrestricted free PCR testing.

The worlds airlines continue to struggle with maintaining schedules and the amount of “lost” luggage continues to escalate.

Concern is rising that the rate of new Covid-19 new infections in China could promote many new strains of the virus.

The war in Ukraine continues, with Russia increasing its attacks. In the latest offensive, Russia have bombarded the country with missiles.
