Day 14. 30 May 2023 Oia, Santorini

A lazy day, we woke late, had a late breakfast and then relaxed, enjoying our surroundings.
The cruise ships continue to visit down the coast at Thira, the sea is deep blue, the temperature is warm, blue skies with a little cloud, us doing it tough! Nothing planned.

Day 13 29 May 2023 Santorini and a Wine Tour

We had a quiet day, our food and wine tour didn’t start until 3:30pm.
So we had a late breakfast, I added photos to yesterday’s blog post (was way too late to do it last night!), and then I went for a walk east from our hotel, Oia is west from us. I had a look at the little village of Krinaki, and had a look at a taverna, Krinaki Taverna, we plan to have lunch at tomorrow. The Taverna looked good.

Day 12 29 May 2033 Santorini & Sunset Cruise

You may not know it, but Santorini is said to be the location of Atlantis, if you want to find out a bit more I have tried to distil the myth and origins of the story. See the end of today’s blog for my interpretation of the story.

And now, onto today.

We had a slow start to our day, we both got 9hrs sleep last night, getting very relaxed.
After breakfast we face-timed our mums to share where we are and see how things were going back home. Nice to hear everyone is doing OK, considering. Was good to chat to Craig & Cook & Von & Tom too and see Pipi.
A bit after 10:40am we took a walk into Oia, the small village at the northern most point of Santorini. The further we walked the busier it got. Along the way we noticed fairly quickly that the side facing the caldera was where it all happens, and it seems only on the cliff face. The northern side of Oia is spotted with small farms and sparsely spaced homes, Continue reading

Day 11 27 May 2023 Milos to Santorini A travel day

We woke at a leisurely time, looked out the window to beautiful blue skies and lots of wind. Lucky we did the sailing cruise yesterday.
We both had a hearty breakfast today. Yoghurt (local, I mean Greek of course) with fruits followed by Strapatsada, a local version of scrabbled eggs with pureed tomato, herbs and olive oil. It was tasty, we are always up to try the local food. So far it has been very good.
We had checked out and with our driver by 10:45am, and on our way to the Port. At check out we were given a parting gift, two ceramic saucers, a nice memento.. Our ferry was running 5 minutes late. I noticed a blast from the recent past at the port, a locked up Covid-19 testing shed stood quietly by the terminal.

Day 10 26 May 2023. Day Cruising Milos

We were picked up at 9am , there were two people, a Spanish couple, already in the transfer van, we picked up two more, a young, quiet, American couple. Then headed to the bay in Pollonia where we were picked up by the ships captain, Kostis, in a small tender. Shoes off was the first order of the day, no shoes worn on the yacht. We were soon at our ride for the day, a 46 ft single mast yacht by the name of Aria Calma. There were already another two couples on board, so them and the mate, Nicky, made 12.

Day 9 25 May 2023 Milos

We woke to a beautiful blue sky, we had breakfast overlooking the water. A very nice way to start the day.
We had a half day tour of Milos organised and were picked up by Andreas our guide at 10am. Straight onto the road and up the hill a bit from our hotel to Filakopi, and the remains of a prehistoric neolithic settlement. The settlement was in existence here for the period 3300 to 1100BC and is one of the most important Bronze Age settlements in the Aegeon.

Day 8 24 May 2023 Naxos to Milos

It’s a travel day, we have our room until midday but don’t get picked up until 5pm for our ferry to Milos.
So we have planned a quiet morning at our hotel, then pack, check out (leave our bags there) and then around lunch head down to the village area to soak up the last bit of Naxos before we leave.
My heart sank trying to get cash out of an atm. Put my card in then a notice came on the screen saying “Out of order”, and my card was eaten! Continue reading

Day 7 23 May 2023. Naxos. Let’s get cooking

A slow start to the day for us. We were picked up by Lambros at about 10am to go inland to Kaloxylos for an authentic Greek family type food cooking class.
We were driven to the centre of Naxos, near the old capital of the island, here we were met by the very friendly Katerina the founder of vioma.gr.
After a drink and some get to know you chat we discovered our menu for the day. We were going to be making Stuffed Zucchini, Cheese Pie and tzatziki. Continue reading

Day 6 22 May 2023 Naxos

We had a lazy start to the day. We have a tour booked for 5’ish.

We set out after 10am for a walk around our local village and down to the beach. We walked through the village and along in front of all the beach front restaurants. It’s very easy to see this place would be packed in peak season by the number of restaurants and beach sun chairs.

Day 5 21st May 2023. Athens to Naxos

It’s Greece’s election day, all people intending to vote have gone or are on their way to the villages in which they are registered to vote, for most Greeks this is the village of their family.
Our alarm went off at 5am, thanks to packing last night we were in the hotel Lobby checking out at 5:30am.
Our driver took us to the Port and pointed out our ferry as we drove in. We were both expecting something small and fast looking. Instead we got a boat similar in size to the Sealink Ferry to Kangaroo Island.
